Snijder Micro Systems releases a starter and development kit for the Embedded Java Controller
Deurne, The Netherlands - The starter and development kit is a complete toolkit for application development with Snijder Micro System's Embedded Java Controller (EJC) and evaluation of its unique features. The EJC is a bundled solution of embedded hardware and software to shortcut the development cycle for embedded Internet applications.
The starter kit provides the DIMM sized EJC with sockets for easy connecting the EJC to the outside world and comes with software tools for setting up the EJC in just a few minutes. After setting up the EJC, it appears on the connected network running HTTP and FTP services and is ready to browse to.
Developers can use the starter kit to experience the rich features of the EJC, to play with the various inputs and outputs and deploy their own PersonalJava applications, servlets, applets and html pages. The only software needed by the user to get started is a suitable version of the Java Development Kit (JDK). The user doesn't need to have knowledge about the underlying hardware platform and RTOS, but can start directly at the Java level. They can easily interface the EJC with their own devices and publish real-time data on the network in dynamic html pages using applet/servlet technologies.
The evaluation board has an external flash memory running the SMS Monitor & Debugger application with tools to:
-
Upload flash images via serial or Ethernet links (using Xmodem or FTP)
-
Update the onboard flash memory
-
Configure parameters on the EJC such as TCP/IP settings.
The EJC starter kit comes with extensive Java libraries, comprehensive documentation, online API docs, an example project demonstrating all features and code snippets.
About the Embedded Java Controller:
The Embedded Java Controller's hardware offers an Ethernet based connection to the Internet and numerous interface possibilities to other devices, including a local LCD or CRT screen, digital I/O, serial RS-232 ports and bus systems like RS-485 and I2C. The software includes a blisteringly fast Java Virtual Machine (JVM) on top of a fully object oriented RTOS and a set of services like a HTTP server (compliant with HTTP/1.1), FTP client/server, SMTP client, POP3 client, Telnet server, etc. User extensions of the HTTP server can be done through Java servlet technology. The firmware can be remotely updated and EJC's software supports hot deployment of user applications over the Internet.
The EJC is a general purpose, PersonalJava compliant platform using open (Internet) technologies, industrial standards and frameworks and can be used by embedded system integrators or OEM's to push information on the web in many different applications and industries.
